Professors Question the
9/11 Commission Report

Many well known and respected professors have expressed significant criticism of the 9/11 Commission Report.  Several even allege government complicity in the terrible acts of 9/11. This section is a collection of their public statements.  It should be made clear that none of these individuals are affiliated with this website.

Listed below are statements by 110 professors that contradict or are critical of the 9/11 Commission Report.  Their collective voices give credibility to the claim that the 9/11 Commission Report is tragically flawed.

These individuals cannot be simply dismissed as irresponsible believers in some 9/11 conspiracy theory. Their sincere concern, backed by their dedication to researching and teaching the truth about a wide variety of subjects, demonstrates that criticism of the Commission Report is not inherently irresponsible or illogical, and that, in fact, it can be just the opposite.

• Essay 9/11: Rational Beliefs are not Paranoid 12/8/06:
  "The impact of the planes cannot have caused enough damage to bring the [World Trade Center] buildings down, since the buildings were designed to withstand them (as Frank De Martini, the project manager, has observed), the planes that hit were very similar to those they were designed to withstand, and they continued to stand after those impacts with negligible effects. ...
  
  WTC-7 [570 feet tall, 47 stories, and not hit by an airplane] came down in a classic controlled demolition at 5:20 PM/ET after Larry Silverstein suggested the best thing to do might be to "pull it", displaying all the characteristics of classic controlled demolitions: a complete, abrupt, and total collapse into its own footprint, where the floors are all falling at the same time, and so forth, an event so embarrassing to the official account that it is not even mentioned in THE 9/11 COMMISSION REPORT.
  
  The hit point at the Pentagon was too small to accommodate a 100-ton airliner with a 125-foot wingspan and a tail that stands 44 feet above the ground; the kind and quantity of debris was wrong for a Boeing 757: no wings, no fuselage, no seats, no bodies, no luggage, no tail! Which means that the building was not hit by a Boeing 757. ...
  
  There are more, especially about the alleged hijackers, including that they were not competent to fly the planes and their names were not on any passenger manifest. Several have turned up alive and well and living in the Middle East. The government has not even produced their tickets as evidence that they actually could have boarded the aircraft they are alleged to have hijacked. • Review of The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions 5/5/05: "David Ray Griffin is a retired professor of theology and philosophy at the School of Theology in Claremont, California.  He is a respected scholar and researcher in the academic world.  However this book and his earlier one, The New Pearl Harbor, are essential reading for both Americans and Canadians. David raises many questions about the official account of 9/11 in his first book and now in this second one he goes through the findings of the 9/11 Commission which he believes both ignored and distorted the mounting evidence that the official story cannot be the correct one. ... • Review of The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions 5/13/05: "Like its predecessor The New Pearl Harbor, David Ray Griffin's The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions challenges the received explanation of the 9/11 attacks--now given official sanction by the Commission--with an Everest of evidence showing the probable complicity of high-level members of the military and the present Administration. ...
  
  In the Introduction Griffin gives a key reason why the supposedly impartial Commission, staffed by five Republicans and five Democrats, carried out a highly partial investigation and produced a report that amounts to a coverup. A pivotal reason for this is that the commission's executive director, who "pick[ed] the areas of investigation, the briefing materials, the topics for hearings, the witnesses, and the lines of questioning . . ." was Philip Zelikow, who was deeply involved in the Bush administration. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that of the two main competing theories explaining 9/11--that Al Qaeda terrorists carried out the attacks alone, or that crucial US military and government figures were complicit--only the first is examined. Griffin takes on the task of investigating the official account of the 9/11 attacks, asking questions that beg to be asked, ferreting out inconsistencies in White House, Pentagon, and State Department reports, analyzing possible scenarios, and asking what kinds of evidence would properly address unanswered questions.
  
  Griffin invites the reader to examine two possible explanations to account for the inconsistencies: the "incompetence" theory and the "complicity" theory. The former rests on the assumption that stupid mistakes were made both before and after the attack. The latter rests on the assumption that false official accounts were made about advance notice of the attacks and/or that after-the-fact obstruction of investigations took place.   Conclusion: We may differ over the political plausibility of conspiracies that have been proposed in connection with the destruction of 9/11.  But the physical implausibility of the official scenario concerning the towers’ collapse should be beyond dispute.  This is an area where physicists’ calculations and our commonsense notions of how tall objects fall down both point to the conclusion that sophisticated engineering and carefully-timed explosive charges would be required for the towers to fall in the manner that they did."   It is now a well known fact that there was no connection between Iraq and Bin Laden/Al Queda, despite forceful efforts by Colin Powell to present the UN with bogus evidence. But what is equally important, the US, the UN, Tony Blair, the Afghan narco-warlords and other US allies have never found a single piece of evidence linking Bin Laden/Al Queda with the terrorist incidents of 9/11. ... The logical conclusion is that Bin Laden/Al Queda had at best a marginal role, if any. What we do know is that several of the terrorists easily obtained multiple entry visas in Saudi Arabia from the US embassy. That at least two of the hijackers were trained at US military bases. That the FBI and CIA had prior notice of a hijacking and let the operatives proceed. That Condaleeza Rice admitted to prior knowledge of a "traditional hijacking" a short time before it occurred. That US airforce planes were not commanded to action until after the hijackers succeeded. ... Deeper past the threshold is the idea that the report failed to address sources of external assistance to the terrorists. Investigations into this area might have lead to a conclusion that elements of various governments - including our own - not only knew about the attacks in advance, but also may have helped facilitate their implementation. The idea that someone in the Government of the United States contributed support to such a horrific attack is inconceivable to many. It is a threshold concept that is so frightening that it brings up a state of mind akin to complete unbelievability. ...
